Changing a tire is an essential task that every driver needs to know how to do. It is common practice to rotate tires to prolong their lives. You may also need to switch from summer tires to snow tires, or vice versa.

It's always good to know how to change a tire, just in case you ever have a flat. So follow are tips on what to do should you ever have a flat tire.

Steps

  1. Ensure that your car is on a level surface, away from traffic.
  2. Place the car in park, engage the parking break, put on your blinkers, and ensure that all passengers exit the car to a safe location.
  3. Chock the wheel at the opposite end of the car to a large object, if possible.
  4. Get your spare ready. Ensure that you have all the tools that you will need.
  5. Remove the hub cap or wheel cover. If you have problems, the hub cap can usually be removed by prying a flat-headed screw-driver in between the hub and the rim.
  6. Spray the lug nuts with lubricant. Using the spanner wrench, loosen each nut.
  7. Position the jack at the correct jacking point, as outlined in the owner's manual. Do not proceed until the car is correctly jacked, and the jack can support the weight of the car if the tire is slightly raised off the ground.
  8. Remove all the lug nuts.
  9. Continue jacking up the car until the wheel can be removed and the spare can be inserted.
  10. Put the lug nuts back on using your hands, then use the spanner wrench to turn the nuts in place.
  11. Lower the junk until the spare touches the ground. Use the spanner wrench to tighten each lug. Tighten the nuts in opposing pairs.
  12. Remove the wheel chocks, load everything back into the car, and go to the nearest service station.

Tips

  • When changing a tire, ensure that you are in a safe location. Driving on a flat tire may be better than risking personal injury. If you are on a road, move your vechicle as far onto the shoulder as possible. Utilize light flares and put on your emergency blinkers.
  • Spare tires are not meant to sustain high-speed driving!
