Cleaning Your Air Vents

I know. It might seem a bit awkward cleaning the leaves off your car, but it will definitely help you in the long run. There are numerous benefits that can happen, but if you don’t clean your air vents you can find yourself with a very large bill from the mechanic.

You might think that I don’t have to clean the vents. The leaves blow right off when I start driving on the road or the highway. That is true but there are certain places around the car where these leaves and other debris accumulate.

On of the most affected areas where there is a high accumulation of debris is right under your hood. There are main vents under your hood that allow fresh air to enter the cabin. Now this is one of the main areas where you receive fresh air from outside and if it’s all blocked by debris, this can cause problems.

These small leaves can cause large problems for your car and wallet. Blocked vents will make your AC work harder than it has to, the heat will blow much slower, and this all will overwork your fan. If that goes, it’s at least two to three hundred to fix it. Not only mechanical but health problems can occur. If you leave the debris under your hood for a long time, it will sit and start to rot. The rotting process creates a lot of bacterial agents, which can be pushed towards the cabin and into your lungs.

Another major consequence of not cleaning up the debris is the chance of rust developing in and around your car. If leaves and other debris stay moist for extended periods of time, they can start eating away at your paint and even plastic. This eventual deterioration will lead to the formation of rust, which is like cancer to your car. Do you want to give cancer to your car?

If you think about it, 5 extra minutes of work will save you over $500. All you have to do is raise your hood and observe if there is a high accumulation of debris. If there is, it’s very easy to clean up and you can do it in many ways.

What I found helpful is following this method. First off, clear as much debris as you can with your hands. Once you got that done, grab a vacuum and clear all the dirt and smaller leaves your hands left behind. Put your suction power at its highest and get all the debris inside the vent out as well. Next, grab a high pressure hose and clean all the remaining dirt, leaves, and debris left behind by the vacuum.

You should clean the vents every time you take your car in for a wash. Remember, a few minutes of work and you have ensured the longevity of your vehicle.
