A spark plug is an electrical device that fits into the cylinder head of some internal combustion engines and ignites compressed aerosol gasoline by means of an electric spark. Internal combustion engines often have spark-ignition engines, which require spark plugs to commence combustion.

Spark plugs are usually replaced every 80,000 to 160,000 km, because they often cease to work efficiently with age. Replacing the spark plugs, plug cables, and the rotor and distributor cap will improve the fuel mileage, eliminate engine starting probles, reduce pollution, and provide for smoother operation.

Steps

  1. Let the engine cool down. A hot plug expands and can be damaged easily.
  2. Use masking tape to label each old plug wire to its corresponding end on the distributor. Work on only one spark plug and cable at a time.
  3. Gently twist and pull the spark plug boot, and not the cable, until the boot comes off. A spark plug cable puller can also be used in this situation.
  4. Remove the old spark plug using a spark plug socket and ratchet handle.
  5. Set the electrode gap on the new spark plug to the measurements in your owner's manual.
  6. Spray lubricant onto the new plug's treads before installing them. Do not over-tighten the new spark plugs.
  7. Remove the old plug cable from the distributor and find its replacement.
  8. Match the position of the new distributor cap to the old one, and attache the new cable to its corresponding terminal.
  9. Remove the old distributor cap, lift off the rotor, and replace it with the new one. Replace the distributor cap.
  10. Repeat steps 3 to 8 for each of the remaining spark plugs and cables.
